Breed Overview

White GoldendoodlesOrigin: Since their beginnings in the twentieth century when their name was coined, Goldendoodles have been bred as support animals, service dogs, and companions, solidifying their place in the hearts of dog people the world over. In 1989, the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia bred the first Goldendoodle, a Golden Retriever and Poodle mix. After booming popularity with Labradoodles, the beloved mix of Labrador and Poodle genes, Goldendoodles raced to the top of the charts in the 1990s in the US where they remain to this day.

History: Breeding efforts have led to varieties of Poodle and Retriever mixes, each with their own specialties and filling different roles for their owners

Breed Attributes

Goldendoodles geneticsTemperament: Much like their Retriever ancestors, these pups are eager to fill roles, complete tasks, and please their owner. This loyal nature makes Goldendoodles excellent companions for tasks or service and outstanding domestic pets. At home, these dogs tend to be laid-back and snuggly, and some Doodles may not even bark at the doorbell.

Due to their intense loyalty to their pack (be it their owner or animal siblings), separation anxiety may arise for even for most relaxed Doodle. A soothing bath with a calming shampoo, wholesome stress-relief treats, and behavioral training can help ease this anxiety.

Personality: Often filling roles as support and therapy animals, these kindhearted dogs are more than a sweet face; generally steady and observant, Doodles are among the calmest dog breeds. Regarded as above-average intelligence pets, the dog’s overall temperament may be greatly affected by their exercise and engagement. When this breed exhibits stress, anxiety, or destructive behavior, they may be bored and in need of some play. Active toys such as lick mats, treat-hiders, and puzzle toys make great outlets for pent-up energy, especially if home alone.

Ideal Owner: You! Mini and standard Goldendoodles are incredibly affectionate animals, with big hearts and an instinctual loyalty to their pack. Whether part of a dynamic canine/human duo or an essential character in a large family, these dogs can thrive just about anywhere.

Fur Care

Mini Goldendoodles

Grooming: Thanks to their bountiful blend of genetics, these dogs tend to have medium-length, light-colored, curly fur that may require more care than the average mix breed. Regular brushing and bathing are key to maintaining a healthy, shiny coat. Be sure to get your dog accustomed to grooming as early as possible to help make brushing a stress-free part of their day.

White Golden Doodles can always benefit from a brightening shampoo to keep their coat shiny and brilliant. A nourishing oatmeal shampoo is great to enrich the skin and condition the fur– essential for these gorgeous pups!

Shedding: These canines exhibit mild shedding, more so in molting season as with all breeds. This low level of shedding puts Goldendoodles in the hypoallergenic category, however, any breed that sheds releases some allergens that may affect nearby humans. Consistent brushing with an undercoat brush helps collect loose fur and dead skin, so groomers often recommend brushing every day or at least a few times every week.

Dermatological Health: Doodles are genetically predisposed to sebaceous adenitis, a skin disease causing a scaly, waxy buildup on the coat as well as fur loss due to inflammation of the sebaceous gland. Ask your vet about any abnormal skin issues or chronic itching your pup is experiencing.

All dogs are susceptible to a common condition called contact dermatitis, an allergic reaction to something that touched their skin. Products like shampoos or balms and outdoor irritants such as pollen can cause this issue, so be sure to use only gentle topical products and steer your pup away from strange plants when outside. Our Tea Tree Oil Shampoo contains deep-cleansing ingredients to help flush out and cleanse irritations from aforementioned sources and more.

Colors: Brown, White

Goldendoodles itchingCommon Issues: Goldendoodle health issues are generally inherited from their large-breed ancestors, mainly hip and joint dysplasia and eye problems. An ocular lens condition called Cataracts is one of the most common health issues among Retrievers, which they pass on to Doodle offspring. As with all health concerns, veterinary evaluation is essential for diagnosing and dealing with cataracts.

Joint or hip dysplasia occurs in the instance of an abnormality in the joint structure; early examination for this condition, healthy activity levels, and supplementation can all contribute to maintaining healthy joints for these dogs. Many veterinarians recommend canine multivitamin or joint support supplements for pups prone to dysplasia, so look out for power-house ingredients such as Glucosamine, Green Lipped Mussel, and MSM in your dog’s supplements.

Addison’s Disease is another canine health issue often seen in Goldendoodles. This condition occurs when a dog’s adrenal glands aren’t producing enough corticosteroids. This disease must be addressed by a veterinarian, and with treatment dogs with Addison’s can live long and healthy lives.

Nutrition: Large canines of all breeds require high-quality proteins in their diet for many bodily processes, and amino acid production is one of the most important processes for Doodles. Aminos are building blocks for tendon and muscle development, which is key for breeds prone to joint conditions as mentioned above. Veterinarians typically recommend nutrient-dense foods for large and highly active canines to provide high-quality proteins, fats, and carbohydrates without too many extra calories.

Lifespan: 10-15 years

Physical Activity

Goldendoodle common health issuesTraining: Possibly due to their Poodle ancestry, highly trainable Doodles can be housebroken and trained to follow commands at a young age; earlier training helps canines become accustomed to trusting their human, and their loyal nature makes this process even easier. Clicker training is one of the most popular methods for Goldendoodles, as positive reinforcement is easy for dogs to understand.

Exercise: Goldendoodles enjoy plenty of playtime, including activities such as swimming, hiking, walking, and fetch. Their Poodle ancestors are hunting canines, so these dogs tend to enjoy the outdoors and hunting with their owner, and their Retriever instincts will have them running after just about anything you throw their way.

Moderate energy levels mean this breed requires at least one daily walk and play session, but don’t worry– they’ll be tuckered out and ready for snuggles before you know it.
